What We Assess

A deeper understanding of how children, teens, and college students learn, think, and function

Neuropsychological evaluation builds on what is often learned through school-based or psychoeducational testing, offering a more in-depth understanding when additional clarity is needed.

Psychoeducational evaluations often focus on academic skills and learning differences, while neuropsychological evaluations take a broader and more in-depth look at the cognitive processes that influence how those skills develop and function over time.

We look closely at the underlying processes that shape how your child, teen, or college student takes in information, makes sense of it, and uses it over time, particularly when learning feels inconsistent, effortful, or impacted by medical or neurological factors.

Our clinicians have advanced training in children's hospitals and specialized clinical settings, including postdoctoral work focused on evaluating complex cognitive and medical profiles. This allows us to evaluate these patterns with a level of depth and precision that extends beyond standard clinical training.

We assess areas including:

  • Memory and learning
  • Attention and concentration
  • Processing speed
  • Language and verbal reasoning
  • Visual-spatial skills
  • Executive functioning and organization
  • Problem-solving and flexibility
  • Motor coordination
  • Social-emotional functioning

It is often the pattern across these areas that explains why a capable student may be working harder than expected or not performing consistently.

Every evaluation is thoughtfully tailored to your child's history, concerns, and stage of development, whether they are in elementary school, navigating the increasing expectations of adolescence, or managing the independence and complexity of college.

We use well-established, evidence-based tools and translate the findings into clear, practical recommendations that support success at school, at home, and in daily life.

Finding the Right Fit

Which Evaluation Is the Right Fit?

A brief guide to help you determine the most appropriate next step.

Both psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations provide valuable insight. The right choice depends on the questions you are trying to answer.

A psychoeducational evaluation may be the best fit when:

  • The primary concern is academic performance or learning differences
  • You are seeking clarity around reading, writing, or math skills
  • School-based supports or accommodations are the main goal
  • There are no significant medical, neurological, or complex cognitive concerns

A neuropsychological evaluation may be more appropriate when:

  • Learning feels inconsistent, effortful, or difficult to explain
  • There are concerns with attention, memory, or executive functioning
  • Test-taking, recall, or processing under pressure are challenging
  • There has been a concussion, head injury, or medical treatment
  • A neurological or medical condition may be impacting learning
  • Previous evaluations have not fully explained what you are seeing
  • You are looking for a more comprehensive understanding of how your child, teen, or college student functions across settings

Not sure where to start?

Many families are not certain, and that is completely appropriate.

We are happy to speak with you, understand your concerns, and guide you toward the most appropriate evaluation based on your child's needs.

When to Consider an Evaluation

When performance, effort, and ability are not fully aligning

Families often reach out after they have been paying close attention and thoughtfully supporting their child, teen, or college student, and are looking for a clearer understanding of what may be getting in the way.

A neuropsychological evaluation provides insight into how your child is thinking, learning, and managing cognitive demands, both academically and in daily life.

You may be noticing:

  • Academic performance that does not reflect ability
  • Difficulty retaining information or recalling what was learned
  • Struggles with test-taking despite preparation
  • Challenges with attention, working memory, or organization
  • Increased effort with inconsistent results
  • Changes following a concussion, head injury, or medical treatment
  • A neurological or medical condition impacting thinking or learning
  • Limited progress despite prior supports or evaluations

When a capable student is working this hard, it is often worth understanding why.

In some cases, the concern is less specific, but just as important. Things feel harder than they should. Growing frustration, stress, or loss of confidence. A level of effort that is difficult to sustain over time.

These patterns often become more noticeable as expectations increase, from childhood through adolescence and into the college years.

A comprehensive evaluation brings clarity and a more confident path forward. If you are considering this step, we welcome the opportunity to speak with you and determine the most appropriate next step for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

What families often want to know before getting started

It is completely natural to have questions as you consider this step. We aim to make the process clear, thoughtful, and easy to navigate. Here are answers to the questions families ask us most often.

A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive, science-based assessment that examines how your child's brain functions across key areas like memory, attention, processing speed, language, executive functioning, and problem-solving. At Whole Child Collective, our licensed child psychologists use gold-standard testing instruments to build a detailed picture of your child or teen's cognitive strengths and the areas where targeted support can help them thrive. The results go beyond a simple diagnosis. They give your family a clear understanding of how your child thinks and learns, along with actionable recommendations for school, home, and beyond.

A psychoeducational evaluation focuses primarily on intellectual ability and academic achievement to identify learning disabilities like dyslexia or dyscalculia. A neuropsychological evaluation includes that same academic and intellectual testing but goes much deeper. It also assesses attention, executive functioning, memory, language, visual-spatial skills, processing speed, and social-emotional functioning. This broader scope is especially important when your child has a medical condition affecting the brain, when previous evaluations have not fully explained the challenges you are seeing, or when you want a more complete understanding of why your child is struggling.

Neuropsychological evaluations can help identify a wide range of conditions and cognitive challenges, including ADHD, learning disorders (such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia), anxiety, and executive functioning difficulties. They are also especially valuable for understanding the cognitive effects of neurological and medical conditions such as epilepsy, seizure disorders, concussions, traumatic brain injuries, and cerebral palsy. At Whole Child Collective, every evaluation is tailored to your child's unique history and concerns.

At Whole Child Collective, the neuropsychological evaluation process includes an intake session with parents (approximately one hour), two testing sessions with your child or teen (each lasting approximately two and a half to three hours), and a feedback session where we walk you through the results and recommendations. The entire process typically spans several weeks from start to finish, and we design each step to be thorough without feeling rushed.

Testing sessions take place in our welcoming, child-friendly office in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Your child or teen will work one-on-one with a psychologist and complete a variety of activities, including puzzles, pattern recognition, verbal tasks, paper-and-pencil exercises, and computer-based measures. These activities are designed to assess different areas of brain function in an engaging, age-appropriate way. We build in breaks so your child stays comfortable and can do their best throughout the session.

Choosing the right evaluation can feel confusing, and that is completely normal. In general, a neuropsychological evaluation may be the best fit if your child has a known or suspected neurological condition (such as epilepsy or a history of concussion), if previous evaluations have not fully explained their challenges, or if you are seeing difficulties across multiple areas like attention, memory, and school performance. If your primary concern is a specific learning difference like dyslexia, a psychoeducational evaluation may be a great starting point. Our team is happy to help you determine the right path.

Yes. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation provides the detailed cognitive and academic data that schools often need to develop or update a Section 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Our reports include specific, actionable recommendations tailored to your child's learning profile, and we are available to coordinate with your child's school team to help put the right supports in place. We believe the best outcomes happen when families, schools, and providers are working together.

Once testing is finished, our team prepares a comprehensive, user-friendly written report and schedules a feedback session to walk through the findings in plain language. You will leave with a clear understanding of your child's cognitive profile, their strengths, and personalized recommendations for next steps. Those next steps might include school accommodations, tutoring connections, evidence-based therapy, or coordination with your child's medical team. When appropriate, we also offer a separate feedback session for your child or teen.

The best approach is to keep things simple and positive. Tell your child they will be meeting with a psychologist who wants to learn about how they think and learn. Let them know the activities will include things like puzzles, questions, and games. We recommend a good night's sleep, a solid breakfast, and bringing any glasses or hearing aids. There are no shots, no needles, and nothing to study for. Our team will make sure your child feels comfortable from the moment they arrive.

All neuropsychological evaluations at Whole Child Collective are performed by licensed child psychologists who completed specialized training at renowned children's hospitals and medical settings, including doctoral internship and postdoctoral training focused on young people. This specialized background means we understand the nuances of pediatric brain development and know how to translate evaluation findings into practical, real-world recommendations that make a meaningful difference for your child and your family.
